remembering 9/11…
i think everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing when they first heard about the planes crashing into the twin towers. it’s one of those times in your life that will be forever etched in memory.
i remembering watching the television as the events unfolded and seeing that second plane crash into the south tower. i couldn’t help but weep. i knew then the nothing will ever be the same.
2,977 lives were lost that day. mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, firemen, policemen, paramedics… most just going about as they would any other work day. others, heroes who knew well enough that they were going to lose their own lives just to save others. but they did not flinch. they did not back down. they gave the ultimate sacrifice.
only time will truly tell when we will really be able to move on from this tragedy. although 10 years seems to be a long time, the wounds are still fresh. they still ache. we still cry.
every time i walk through airport security i am reminded that our lives will never be the same post 9/11. we will never have the same sense of security we had before then. we will always be looking over our shoulder and wonder if we are safe.
i dream of a day when we are all free from fear, from hatred, from uncertainty. i know it’s quite an impossible dream, but i hope we do get there someday.
in the meantime, let us all remember and pray for all those lives cut short that fateful day. let us also pray for the families who continue to grieve the loss of their loved ones.
and let us pray, too, that it never happens again.
